Ludwig van Beethoven was born on the 16th december, 1770, in Bonn, to a family of less than modest means. His education was rather strict, his father wished for a gifted child. He managed his musical apprentiship within his social encounters. At twelve years of age he received the title of second court organist. A rich friend, the Count Waldstein (to whom Beethoven dedicated one of his most beautiful piano sonatas), obtained for him an educational trip to Vienna., where he was to meet Mozart, allready weakened by sickness.
Beethoven was only twenty years old, his mother was dead, his two brothers dependent of him, and his father drowning in alcoolism. To begin with feasted by the vienese aristocracy, but rapidly disgusted by the perpetual plot of an ungrateful capital with the geniuses that it shelterred (Mozart, Schubert and even Webern), Beethoven had the added handicap of being deaf. The contrast is striking between the profomdly unhappy life and the huge production both in quantity and revolutionary character. The symphony, string quartet, the writing for the piano, saw with Beethoven irremediable unheavles.
Beethoven died on the 26th march 1827. For once, contrary to custom, this genius was immediately acclaimed, 20 000 people took him to his grave.
